English Extra adults: more than just English classes

When you enrol with the British Council, you benefit from a wide range of activities that complement your language-learning experience, and help develop your confidence and fluency in spoken English.

Activities include:

Talks in English

Talks in English is a series of talks on a wide range of subjects open to our students and the general public. Past speakers have included award winning author Sebastian Faulks and Head of The Economist's Paris bureau, Sophie Pedder.  We give priority seats to our students for these events.

All talks are usually 45 minutes long and are delivered in English. Each talk is followed by refreshments, giving attendees a chance to practise their English speaking and listening skills.

Trips and tours

Past trips have included:

  • guided tours of the British Embassy and the Ambassador’s residence, including a traditional cup of tea
  • guided tours of the American library
  • trips to London with a true londoner and British Council teacher as a guide (train tickets and food not included).

Watch the London trip video1 and video 2.

Social events

Every month, our English Extra programme hosts social events at our centres in Invalides and Nation.

Students use this as an opportunity to put what they learn into practice, exchanging with other students, teachers and British Council staff.

Past social events have included:

  • celebrating Scotland’s national poet on Burn’s night, including recitals and Haggis tasting
  • traditional pub quizzes
  • shared breakfasts to mingle and chat over tea or coffee and English biscuits
  • welcome drinks

As the UK’s organisation for cultural relations, students also benefit from discounted tickets for events and exhibitions that we sponsor or partner with.
